Collection: UMBRELLA BY SIR MICHAEL CRAIG-MARTIN

Sir Michael Craig-Martin’s Umbrella (2026) is a bespoke charity commission for Paul Smith’s Foundation, created to fund the launch of a new visual artist residency in central London. With support from Cristea Roberts Gallery and Jealous Gallery, Craig-Martin is donating 100% of the proceeds from the edition to the Foundation. Established by Sir Paul Smith to improve the business skills of creative people, the Foundation will use the funds to establish a residency combining subsidised studio space with a bespoke programme of training in cashflow, pricing, selling and professional development.

The umbrella is a motif to which Craig-Martin has returned throughout his practice. In Umbrella, the familiar object is rendered through the precise line and unexpected colour that define his visual language. Presented in three colourways, the edition can be purchased individually or as a complete set.

Bespoke conservation-standard framing is available on request, with the option to request a framing quote during checkout or get in touch with enquiries.

Umbrella by Sir Michael Craig-Martin

Sir Michael Craig-Martin was born in Dublin in 1941 and spent his formative years in the United States. He studied at Yale University School of Art and Architecture before returning to the United Kingdom in 1966.

In 1972, Craig-Martin participated in The New Art at the Hayward Gallery, London, a landmark exhibition of British Conceptual art. The following year, he produced An Oak Tree (1973), in which a glass of water, a shelf and an accompanying text are used to explore questions of perception, language and belief.

From the late 1970s onwards, Craig-Martin developed an expanding visual vocabulary of precisely delineated everyday objects. Working across drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and installation, his practice examines how objects are represented, recognised and understood.

In 2024, the Royal Academy of Arts, London, staged Michael Craig Martin, the largest and most comprehensive survey of his 60-year career ever held in the UK, alongside Michael Craig-Martin: An Anthology at Cristea Roberts Gallery and the publication of his first catalogue raisonné of prints and multiples, The Complete Prints and Multiples(Art/Books, 2024). He was elected a Royal Academician in 2006. His work is held in major public collections including Tate, the Museum of Modern Art New York, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
