Jealous North is so excited to present Sacred Cartography', a solo show featuring Stanley Donwood's latest print editions with Jealous.
These colourful Sacred Landscapes are based on hybrid cartographical and topological forms exploring the ancient landscapes that surround mysterious sites such as Stonehenge, Wayland’s Smithy and the Cerne Abbas Giant amongst many others.
Stanley Donwood's ongoing fascination with the natural world can be seen in these large screen prints. These are not mystical, New Age depictions as such but rather brash, bold colour field interpretations showing centuries-old field boundaries, trackways and paths.
"The idea is that the land and the heavens are intimately connected, both physically, through transpiration and evaporation and precipitation, but also in other, hidden, mysterious ways. It’s not for nothing that people have always worshipped the skies, that our gods dwell above us. So in my paintings of sacred landscapes, each carefully delineated field pours its colour upwards, up into the black heavens"
Stanley Donwood
By using survey ordnance maps to remove modern architectures such as motorways and buildings, Donwood reconnects us to a landscape which ancient society deemed sacred.
Once forgotten landscapes are the blue print for this latest collection, featuring mysterious landmarks. Stanley Donwood to explores the connection we have to the land, and the relationship the land has with the sky too.
