PAUL DAVIS - COUNTERCULTURE

Paul Davis

Jealous North

01 Jun 2022 — 19 Jun 2022

Jealous North is proud to exhibit ‘COUNTERCULTURE’ Paul Davis’ solo exhibition, exploring his interest in kiosks, service desks, and counters.

This new series of work, first exhibited at Jealous East in May, observes the physical structures that propose a public connection - encounters that are gradually being abandoned for the digital sphere and have been drastically changed due to the pandemic.
This exhibition highlights the commonness of an interaction at a counter and celebrates the unpredictability of each meeting. On one side, a demand and on the other, (hopefully) a result. Whether you love or hate these moments, they are a necessity. Davis’ explorations includes numerous drawings as well as sculptural works that show the artist’s love of the humble kiosk.
‘These structures are silent helpers, functioning well, doing a good job. A piece of architecture within architecture: analogue, stoic and un-AI.’ - Paul Davis, 2022

Counters have undergone their own historical evolution in the wake of the pandemic, approached with masks, screens, social distancing. Desks, booths and kiosks had to keep up with our demands, and they became more essential than ever, as a key tool in protecting the public. Davis believes they should be celebrated, before the digital era swallows these spaces and turns them into online bot chatrooms.
